(ANSA) – KIEV, 12 SEPTEMBER – The International Committee of the Red Cross has confirmed the deaths of three of its employees in an attack in eastern Ukraine, previously announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who had attributed it to Russian forces. “I condemn in the strongest terms the attacks against Red Cross staff. It is unacceptable that the bombings hit an aid distribution site,” said in a statement the president of the International Committee, Mirjana Spoljaric, who did not, however, indicate who fired the shots that killed the three workers and wounded two others. According to Kiev, the three victims were Ukrainian citizens. The convoy, hit by “artillery fire”, was in the village of Viroliubivka, north of the city of Donetsk, where it was supposed to deliver blocks of firewood and coal to residents for heating in the coming winter. Spoljaric is expected in the coming days in Moscow where she will meet with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other senior government officials to discuss, among other things, respect for international humanitarian law, prisoners of war and missing persons, and the protection of humanitarian workers, said the organization’s spokesman Jason Straziuso.
