Berlin – In view of the devastating natural disasters in Morocco and Libya, the German Red Cross (DRK) is calling for donations. “We know that the German population is also very concerned about the earthquake in Morocco and the flood disaster in Libya, and so is the desire to offer support to the local people,” said DRK President Gerda Hasselfeldt to the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition).
The German Red Cross is therefore asking for donations and has set up the fundraising purposes “Earthquake Morocco” and “Floods Libya”. Hasselfeldt also said that for both Morocco and Libya they are in coordination with the local sister societies, the Moroccan Red Crescent and the Libyan Red Crescent. It’s about determining exactly “which help is most urgently needed and to what extent, so that we can provide targeted support and continually adapt our help to the constantly changing needs on site,” said Hasselfeldt. The focus is currently on rescuing and caring for people.
“In the coming weeks, the main focus will be on providing the affected population with drinking water, food and accommodation.” A focus of DRK assistance in Libya will probably be the areas of water, sanitation and hygiene, said Hasselfeldt.
