Red meat: 41% of annual household consumption comes from the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice (HCP)

by times news cr

This proportion remains identical in urban and rural areas, and reaches 65.4% for the 20% of the least well-off households and 31.3% for the most well-off households, indicates the HCP in this note entitled “The expenses and practices of the ritual of Eid Al-Adha”.

Furthermore, the average total annual consumption of meat (including red meat and white meat) in the Moroccan household is estimated at 141 kilograms (kg), including 55.8 kg of red meat.

In terms of expenditure, the HCP reports that the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice represents nearly 30% of the overall expenditure of Moroccan households dedicated annually to the consumption of meat. This share is 41% among households in the least well-off 10% and 23% among those in the most well-off 10%.

Regarding the performance of this ritual, the HCP reveals, according to data from its national survey conducted in 2022 on the standard of living of households, that it is widely practiced.

In fact, only 12.6% of Moroccan households do not perform this ritual during Eid Al-Adha, although this proportion has increased compared to 2014, when it was 4.7%.

This increase in the number of households not participating in the sacrifice remains mainly observed among city dwellers and single-person households.

Thus, city dwellers are more likely not to make the sacrifice compared to rural dwellers (14.3% versus 8.7%). These proportions are respectively 5.9% and 2.5% in 2014.

In addition, nearly 56.4% of single-person households do not participate in the sacrificial ritual, compared to 46.5% in 2014. This proportion falls to 5.5% for households of at least six people, compared to 0.8% in 2014.

Participation in the sacrificial ritual is inversely proportional to the standard of living of the household and the level of education of its head.

Nearly 25.1% of households in the wealthiest 10% do not perform the sacrifice on the occasion of Eid, compared to 7.8% among the poorest 10%.

Furthermore, this abstention goes from 20.1% for households headed by a person with a higher level of education to 11.7% for those headed by a person with no education.

By type of animals sacrificed, 95.6% of households opt for sheep, 4.3% for goats and 0.1% for cattle.

The sacrifice of goats is more recorded among rural households (7.4% against 2.8% in urban areas) and among the category of the 10% of the least well-off households (8.5% against 2.7% for the 10% of the most well-off households).
