Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has been remarkably active this offseason, completing 10 trades as the team looks to contend in 2025.

Among his acquisitions are right-handed pitchers Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, along with first baseman Willson Contreras, significantly bolstering the lineup. Thay’ve positioned them well, though they’re still seeking a key power bat.

  • The Red Sox have made 10 trades this offseason, more than most teams.
  • Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras are key additions to the lineup.
  • the team is still looking to add a power hitter, with Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, and Ketel Marte as potential targets.
  • The Baltimore orioles currently lead the rankings of offseason winners.
  • Toronto’s acquisition of Dylan Cease has also made them a top contender.

Despite the busy trade period, the Red Sox are one of only two teams – along with the Colorado Rockies – that haven’t yet signed a free agent. However, the impact of the trades has been substantial, bringing in much-needed talent. “Sonny Gray is the starter they needed, and willson Contreras is a nice middle-of-the-order add after missing on Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso,” noted Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

What’s the Red Sox’s biggest need right now? According to team officials, adding another power bat remains a top priority, even after acquiring Contreras, who has hit at least 20 home runs in four of the last five seasons.

Breslow has publicly stated the team’s intention to address this need, whether through free agency or further trades. “it’s a priority for us,” Breslow said, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. “We’ve got to make sure that we line up on that target, whether it be a free agency or the trade market, but we’re certainly doing the work to put ourselves in position to do that. I think that there’s an possibility to add another bat to the roster and complement the group that we have right now.”

Potential targets include Alex Bregman,Bo Bichette, and Ketel Marte, all of whom are reportedly on Boston’s radar. However, the Blue jays are also pursuing both Bichette and Bregman, along with Kyle Tucker, considered the best all-around player currently available on the free agent market.

The Orioles currently top the rankings after signing Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract. The Blue Jays are second, having secured right-hander Dylan Cease with a seven-year, $210 million deal.
