Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay After Relationship Breaks

The relationship between the Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin reached a breaking point on Thursday. The club responded by suspending him without pay and removing his nameplate from the team’s dressing room.

Suspension Follows Refusal to Play

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff confirmed the decision in a statement, noting that the team remains focused on the players who are committed to competing. Horcoff, who took over following the firing of former general manager Steve Yzerman on July 15, expressed that the situation had become unfixable. Dylan no longer wants to be a Red Wing, and he’s not with us. That pretty much is a strong statement, Horcoff said. Regarding his own efforts to resolve the conflict, Horcoff added, My initial plan was to try to fix it. I wanted to try to do what I could to keep Dylan here in a Red Wing jersey, and clearly I was unsuccessful doing that.

Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, maintained that his client had acted appropriately. Dylan’s had enough of the situation, Brisson told The Athletic. We believe he’s been very professional and cooperative through this process. Despite the ongoing tension, Larkin had appeared in 10 of Detroit’s 12 games this season, recording two goals and six points.

Larkin's Cap Hit Complicates Potential Trade Deals

When the initial request was made in June, Yzerman noted that Brisson had provided a short list of teams Larkin would be open to joining.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Detroit is contacting teams about young centers and top prospects. A potential trade challenge is Larkin’s $8.7 million annual cap hit, which runs through the 2030-31 season. With the NHL salary cap at $104 million for 2026-27, his contract represents approximately 8.4% of the league-wide ceiling, a substantial commitment for contenders operating close to the cap limit.

Detroit Players Process Tension Despite Recent Wins

The atmosphere in Detroit remains tense as the team attempts to move forward. It’s pretty raw, Horcoff stated regarding the locker room. I think everybody needs some time in the locker room to digest it. Despite the distraction, the team has managed a 5-1-3 record in their past nine games. Defenseman Moritz Seider noted that a recent 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks meant a little more because this is our squad.

The situation extends beyond the veteran forward. Simon Edvinsson, drafted sixth overall in 2021, has 60 points in 175 career games. He has until December 1 to sign a contract; otherwise, he will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the 2026-27 season. Unlike Larkin, Edvinsson has not requested a move.

Potential Trade Destinations

Speculation regarding potential landing spots remains high. While the Minnesota Wild have been consistently connected to the forward, reports suggest Detroit was not convinced that top prospect Danila Yurov should be the central piece of a return. Other teams, such as the Utah Mammoth, are viewed as intriguing fits due to their organizational flexibility.

The Montreal Canadiens also remain an entertaining wrinkle in the saga. Fans in Montreal notably chanted for Larkin during a visit to the city in October, a reception Friedman suggested may have influenced his thinking. While Larkin has historically excluded all seven Canadian teams from his trade lists, analysts suggest that if the standoff continues, he may eventually reach a point where he waives his no-trade clause for the sake of leaving Detroit. For now, the Red Wings remain firm, and the search for a resolution continues.

We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan. In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization’s long-term goals.
