The “Reds” are bringing in a young, talented goalkeeper – who FC Bayern was also once interested in.

Georgian national goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will play for English Premier League club Liverpool FC from summer 2025. The “Reds” and Mamardashvili’s current club Valencia FC have agreed on a transfer for next season, both clubs announced on Tuesday evening. According to media reports, the transfer fee is said to be more than 30 million euros.

The Georgian is Liverpool’s first transfer under Klopp’s successor and team manager Arne Slot. Only the work permit and international clearance are still missing, Liverpool announced. Valencia made it clear that the 1.97 meter tall goalkeeper will finish the current season in Spain.

Mamardashvili had attracted attention at the European Championships with strong performances for surprise team Georgia. He has been under contract with Valencia since summer 2021. A year ago, he was also traded to German record champions FC Bayern.

The 23-year-old Mamardashvili had previously spoken in detail about Bayern’s interest. “My father and my agent were in Munich and conducted the final negotiations,” the goalkeeper said in an interview. “I was already looking for a house in Munich to live in. But as far as I know, in the end they refused to pay 35 million for me” (read more about this here).

That was the sum that Mamardashvili’s club FC Valencia asked for at the time. Too much for Bayern, who instead brought Daniel Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Isar for five million euros. Now FC Liverpool have struck. What that means for the current “Reds” regular goalkeeper Alisson Becker is still unclear.
