President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador He described the re-election as an “invention of those ambitious for power”, a few days after the virtual elected president, Claudia Sheinbuam present a constitutional reform project against legislative re-election.

This Sunday from Yauhquemahcan, Tlaxcala, where he evaluated educational and sports programs and projects in the company of his virtual successor, López Obrador said:

“In addition to being a supporter of Madero, I am in favor of There is no re-election (…) there is no need for re-election, that is an invention of those who are ambitious for power who say ‘no! It is that I am indispensable, I am necessary, I am the one who can guarantee that things continue to work well in Mexico’ No! Nothing of that sort, the one who guarantees that things work well in Mexico is the people of Mexico, that is the sovereign, that is the one who commands.”

He even went further by stressing that the “effective suffrage, No reelection” applies to everyone, including “those of us who love ourselves very much, saying, we should not be too attached to money and power, because that is not happiness.”

López Obrador’s statement came almost 10 days after Sheinbaum Pardo presented a constitutional reform project to eliminate the reelection of deputies and senators, a situation that, in her words, was not a citizen demand.

At a press conference (July 3) Claudia Sheinbaum said that the change in the law occurred in the six-year term of Felipe Calderon, and that currently:

“The people of Mexico do not want re-election, and we saw that in the pre-campaign, in the campaign (…) So, we are simply taking what the people say and putting it in the Constitution, returning the Constitution to its original wording.”

On that occasion, the senator-elect and future Legal Advisor to the presidency, Ernestina Godoy He explained that Sheinbaum Pardo’s project would be sent to the Ministry of the Interior to later be presented to Congress, along with the package sent by López Obrador on February 5th.

“We are returning to what was the motto of the Mexican Revolution, which is ‘effective suffrage, no reelection’, in our history, and that at some point this was lacking and the doctor decides to return and return to the essence of the Constitution of 17,” said Godoy Ramos.

The future president’s project was criticized, among others, by the future senator Gerardo Fernandez Noronawho called it a mistake because it will not allow legislators to pursue political careers.

Despite this, he announced that he would vote a favor of the initiative:

“I am going to vote in favour of eliminating (re-election) and I consider it a mistake. I believe that, just like the judicial career, a political career is made (…) In all countries of the world, political careers are made in Parliament, and I believe that re-election should remain, and others believe not.”

The reelection of the members of both chambers was proposed and approved in 2009, during the Calderón Hinojosa administration; Sheinbaum Pardo’s project seeks to modify the articles 116 and 122 of the Constitution.
