The draw between Wolfsburg and FC Köln (1-1) was marked by an unusual situation. Thorben Siewer, line inspector, suffered a severe blow to the head, in a moment of pure misfortune. This phenomenon led to the assistant referee being replaced… by a mere spectator.
At 14′, Max Finkgrade hit, with a violent shot, the flag, in an involuntary act. The intensity of the shooting was so intense that it left Siewer in clear difficulties. Despite immediate medical assistance, he was unable to recover and was even forced to leave the field of play.
Nicolas Winter, who until then held the role of fourth referee, became the line supervisor. However, there was no replacement to take charge of the position left by Winter, thus leading to uncertainty in the match.
Through the audio system present in the stadium, a volunteer from the public was asked to take on the task. Tobias Krull, sporting director of the MTV Gifhornquickly left the VIP area, where he was sitting, running towards the lawn.
After wearing the official DFB referee kit, he ended up doing his job, also watching, up close, the two goals of the match, scored by Kevin Paredes and Faride Alidou. Certainly, an afternoon that fans of the sport will never forget.
