The main purpose of the project is to improve the accessibility conditions of the Zumaya station, taking into account the recommendations that have been detected in the study of black spots in the network and that are reflected in the White Paper on design criteria. of the stations of the Basque railway network with a gender perspective, published a year ago by Euskal Trenbide Sarea. The most important action is the replacement of the access underpass with another that will double its capacity, and that will be connected to the platforms by lift and fixed stairs.

The station has a traffic of between seven hundred and 2,500 people a day. The neo-Basque style building was designed by the Gipuzkoan architect Ramón Cortázar. Until 1981, it was an interconnection station between the Bilbao-San Sebastián lines and the Urola railway line, with two different buildings for each line. Once the Urola railway operation ceased, in 1988, one of the buildings was removed, leaving the Urola train, which is the current station, in use.

Elevator or fixed stairs

In 1995, the new Zumaya intermodal station was inaugurated, with the bus stops next to the terminal. Currently, users access the station from the Hegoalde junction with Estazioko Kalea, through an underpass that connects to the platforms by means of ramps and fixed stairs.

The works consist of replacing the current underpass, 2.4 meters wide, with a new underpass, whose useful interior width is increased to five metres. The connection with the platforms can be carried out by lift or fixed stairs. The elevators will have capacity for eight people or a load of 630 kilos and will be adapted for people with reduced mobility.

The complete replacement of the current flooring of the station is also planned, including the treads of the stairs to both platforms, as well as the current tiling of the underpass between platforms and stairs.
The project also includes the change of lighting in the underpass between platforms, stairs and a new underpass projected and the placement of double handrails on the stairs of both platforms. The installation of the elevators will make it possible to fill in and enclose the current ramps, taking advantage of the canceled floor area as a ramp, to expand the useful surface area of the platforms.
