The Reform Party announced on the 11th that party leader Heo Eun-ah will attend the Liberation Day celebration ceremony on the 15th.
Senior Spokesperson Kim Sung-yeol announced in a press release that day, “Regardless of whether the six opposition parties do not participate, the New Reform Party plans to have party leader Heo Eun-ah attend this Liberation Day celebration.” He added, “Apart from the inappropriateness of the director of the Independence Hall of Korea and New Right figures, we would like to tell you that we intend to respect the meaning of this national event celebrating the liberation from Japanese colonial rule and the establishment of a government that inherited the legitimacy of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.”
Spokesperson Kim Min-gyu said in a separate commentary on the same day, “The appointment of Kim Hyung-seok as director of the Independence Hall of Korea, who has caused national division with his distorted view of history, is clearly a ‘wrong appointment. ’” He added, “They do not hesitate to make historical claims that are different from the facts and they should be condemned for attempting to sacrifice our history with overly biased ideological standards. President Yoon Seok-yeol should review the appointment of Director Kim from the beginning.”
However, he said, “Apart from the failed personnel appointments, the opposition six parties’ method of boycotting the Liberation Day event itself needs to be reconsidered,” and “I urge the Democratic Party and the six opposition parties to cooperate so that we can remove the stigma of the Republic of Korea being divided again after 79 years of liberation. I ask that you protect the place where we celebrate the joy of liberation and faithfully fulfill the original mission of the National Assembly.”
Meanwhile, the six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, the Fatherland Innovation Party, the Progressive Party, the New Future Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the Basic Income Party, have officially declared or are considering attending the Liberation Day celebration. This is to protest President Yoon Seok-yeol’s appointment of Professor Kim Hyung-seok of Kosin University, who is considered to have “New Right” tendencies, as the director of the Independence Hall of Korea.
