The deputies of the National Security and Justice Commission of the Legislative Assembly met with the Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro, to study reforms to the penal code to toughen penalties for property crimes, such as theft and robbery.

These modifications, which seek to be implemented in the Code of Criminal Procedure (CPP) and the Penal Code, are intended to continue in tune with the transformation of the nation in terms of security.

According to Villatoro, it is important to make these changes, because the periods of expiration of the arrest period are often used by defense attorneys as a tool to delay legal proceedings and thus evade justice. Currently, the arrest for a minor sentence should not exceed one year and for serious crimes it will not extend more than two years.

“For years we have had a perverse code. What we are guaranteeing is that no one convicted of serious crimes goes free. Our desire is justice,” said the delegate.
