Moscow:

A Russian court has sentenced a young soldier to 5 years in prison for refusing to fight in Ukraine. The soldier, Marcel Kandarov (age 24), reportedly did not want to participate in military operations and did not report for duty in May 2022. Law enforcement then tracked down and prosecuted Marcel Kantaro in September.

About 300,000 soldiers were ordered to be mobilized for the Russian army in the war on Ukraine, and new soldiers were selected accordingly. After this announcement, many men left Russia for fear of military service. Notably, many fled to neighboring countries including Armenia, Georgia and Kazakhstan.
