Residents of the area filed a petition in the collector’s office claiming that the panchayat administration refused to levy house tax on the houses of Adi Dravida people in Alakumalai near Tirupur and did not provide water connection.

Refusal to levy house tax

Public Grievance Day meeting was held at Tirupur District Collector’s office yesterday. Collector Vineeth presided over the meeting and received petitions from the public. People belonging to Matheswara Nagar area of Alakmalai panchayat came under the leadership of district panchayat councilor Palaniswami and gave a petition. In that petition they have said:-

On behalf of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, in 2014, the government bought the land and allocated houses to us who did not have a place. We belong to Adi Dravida community and we build houses and some live in huts. Basic facilities such as house tax, house number, drinking water facility, street light facility etc. are not available from the panchayat administration.

Water connection

When we go to pay house tax, they refuse to buy. Through the district panchayat funds, bore wells and motors are installed in our area and water is supplied through tanks. In Prime Minister’s Jaljeevan scheme, Alakmalai village was included in Alakmalai panchayat, but they did not benefit our area. All the houses have been supplied with water.

Even when we applied to build a house under the Housing for All scheme, we did not get it. We who have got government land should be given a certificate and documents should be given to get water connection and house tax.

This is what they have said in the petition.
