The Democratic Party of Korea continued its offensive over the weekend, saying, “We demand an apology from President Yoon Seok-yeol and the dismissal of the Minister of Health and Welfare” in relation to the medical vacuum situation. It is interpreted as an intention to shift responsibility for the current situation to the government and the ruling party while starting discussions on forming a consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties. The Democratic Party also began to demand in earnest the necessity of postponing the increase in medical schools for the 2025 school year, as argued by the medical community. Even within the ruling party, there were claims that “postponing the increase in medical schools for the 2025 school year is necessary.”

Democratic Party Spokesperson Cho Seung-rae said in a commentary on the 8th, “President Yoon and his staff have long since ascended to the throne as the biggest ‘villains’ of the medical crisis,” and “We once again demand an apology from the president and the dismissal of those responsible, including the Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare.” The previous day, Spokesperson Han Min-soo also called for an apology from President Yoon and the dismissal of the Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare, saying, “The one who is the main culprit who made People Power Party Supreme Council member In Yo-han request a surgery favor is President Yoon.”

The Democratic Party also criticized the government’s statement the previous day that “the decision to postpone the increase in medical schools in 2026 is not true,” saying, “The government is once again striking a chord.” Chief Spokesperson Cho said, “The government drew a line by saying that the re-discussion of the increase with the ruling and opposition party consultative body does not mean a postponement of the increase in 2026,” and “They are going back and forth again over a matter that affects the lives of the people. Are they trying to do the consultative body again, after going round and round in the emergency room?” Fellow party member Park Jie-won also pointed out, “It seemed like there was a way to resolve the medical school crisis, but the Blue House is messing around.”

The Democratic Party’s position is that the 2025 medical school quota should not be excluded from discussions in order to resolve the medical gap. Earlier, Representative Lee stated in a meeting with People Power Party Representative Han Dong-hoon, “We agreed that we can no longer discuss increasing the number of medical school students in 2025,” but the current is that there is no need to exclude the 2025 quota from discussions in line with the medical community’s demands.

A key member of the Democratic Party’s Special Committee on Medical Disaster Countermeasures said, “The medical community’s position is that they will not join the consultative body unless the 2025 school year college entrance exams are reexamined, but it is difficult to discuss this without the participation of the medical community,” adding, “We need to properly form a consultative body to resolve this issue.”

Even within the ruling party, there have been voices calling for a postponement of the 2025 medical school enrollment increase. People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo, a former doctor, said in a phone call, “It is wrong to call the 2026 medical school enrollment postponement proposal a mediation proposal,” and “In order for the interested parties to return to the medical field, a postponement of the 2025 medical school enrollment increase is necessary.” Instead of a ruling and opposition party consultative body, Ahn proposed a medical school enrollment public opinion investigation committee with officials from international medical organizations.
