Specialists affirm that regenerative medicine in sciatica has similar success to open surgery.

Doctors specialized in the pain unit have stated that regenerative medicine in the treatment of sciatica-type pain is a less invasive alternative to surgery and that it currently shows great possibilities of success.

Detecting the specific cause of the pain and treating it in an appropriate period will increase the chances of success of these treatments in which recovery periods are minimal.

These treatments, in their experience, present fewer potential complications, which improves the quality of life of patients through outpatient procedures.

Dr. Jorge Orduña, head of the Hospital Pain Unit Quirónsalud Valencia y Quirónsalud Torreviejahas assured that the most important thing is to make a correct diagnosis of the cause of the pain and know the exact level at which the nerve has been pinched or compressed.

To do this, a medical visit and tests such as magnetic resonance imaging and, sometimes, electromyography have been classified as essential.

“Once the level of nerve compression is known, there are both pharmacological and interventional treatments (through infiltrations) that allow the problem to be treated from where it is occurring. This makes the effectiveness much greater,” he added in an interview with EFE.

Regarding the techniques used for this ailment, Orduña has commented that the differential value of the pain units is to treat pain without the need for surgery,” which is why he has highlighted some methods such as lumbar epidural with different anti-inflammatory substances, radiofrequency of dorsal root ganglion of the spinal nerve; neurostimulation of posterior cords; and intradiscal treatments with regenerative medicine.

Along these lines, Dr. Juan Fernando García Henares, head of the Pain Unit of Quirónsalud Alicantehas detailed that minimally invasive techniques are generally used to reduce pressure or even the affected disc such as laser or radiofrequency combined with regenerative therapies with stem cells or platelet-rich plasma, or intradiscal ozone.

“All our treatments are done in a minimally invasive way, that is, outpatient and percutaneous,” he stressed to delve into the fact that, among its advantages, is “the anti-inflammatory potential, its minimal adverse reactions because it is obtained from the same patient and the preservation of the structure of the disc and with it the biomechanical stability of that anatomical segment.”

Finally, García Henares has highlighted that each case is evaluated individually, and these approaches are prioritized before considering open surgery, which carries a higher risk and longer recovery time.
