This Sunday (5), millions of students across Brazil are facing the first day of exams for the National High School Exam (ENEM) 2023. With the participation of around 3.9 million registered students, this year records an increase in compared to 2022, when 3.4 million candidates took the exam. However, the numbers are still below the expectations declared by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) at the beginning of this year.
ENEM is one of the most awaited and comprehensive tests in Brazil, opening doors for thousands of students seeking access to higher education. In 2023, the number of registrants grew compared to the previous year.

The record number of registrants in the history of the exam occurred in 2014, under the government of then president Dilma Rousseff (PT), when 8.7 million people signed up to take it.
President Lula justified his desire to surpass the ENEM registration record as a response to what he considers to be a lack of motivation on the part of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL-RJ).
According to Lula, Bolsonaro would have discouraged young people from taking the test, and he was determined to prove that young Brazilians want to continue their studies.
Although the number of people enrolled in ENEM 2023 is below the president’s expectations of breaking the 2014 record, it is important to highlight that the result still represents an increase compared to the previous year.
