Thiruvananthapuram: Service unions objected to the restriction of dependent appointment of government employees. The change in the current practice of dependent appointment was opposed, including by left organizations. The service unions also opposed the fourth Saturday holiday for government employees. The argument of the service organizations is that they will not accept the reduction in the number of casual leaves and making the fourth Saturday a holiday.

All the service organizations objected to the discussions held with the service organizations led by the Chief Secretary regarding the control of dependent appointment of government employees. Unions did not approve of the move to restrict dependent recruitment to those who qualified to get a job within a year. The organizations demanded that those who did not get a job should be given not Rs 10 lakh for the appointment itself. At present there are only about a thousand applications seeking dependent appointment. The organizations point out that even if all of them are appointed, they will not cross the five percent limit set by the High Court.

The Chief Secretary directed the organizations to submit the proposals in writing. Meanwhile, the service unions also opposed the fourth Saturday holiday for government employees. If the fourth Saturday is a holiday, 12 additional holidays will be available in the year. Instead, 20 casual leaves will be reduced to 15. Working hours will be increased by half an hour. This was the proposal put forward by the government. But the organizations were taking a stand that they would not accept the fourth Saturday as a holiday with conditions. The meeting was held online. The government is not likely to take a decision soon in view of the opposition raised by the left service organisations.
