Gangai Amaran, the younger brother of the composer Ilayaraja. He traveled with his brothers Bhaskar, Varadarajan and Ilayaraja in the band and later earned acclaim for his versatility as a songwriter, composer, screenwriter and director in Tamil cinema. He is currently a member of the Audit Committee and a supporter of the BJP. His sons Venkat Prabhu, the eldest, is a notable director in Tamil and Premji, the youngest, is a composer and actor.
Amaran’s relationship with his brother Ilayaraja is not good and it seems that there was a rift between them during the production of ‘Chinna Ramasamy Periya Ramasamy’ in 2000 directed by RV Udayakumar and starring Jayaram and Udayabanu. Thus Gangai Amaran did not come to inquire at the funeral even when Ilayaraja’s wife Jeeva died. Thus the problem between the two has been going on for more than 21 years.
