Washington,

Hong Kong is under the direct control of China. There, the online newspaper ‘Stand News’ published news and articles in support of democracy.

Due to this, the Hong Kong administration considers the newspaper to be involved in anti-national activities. Earlier in the day, more than 100 police raided the online newspaper and arrested seven senior journalists, including its editor. This has resonated internationally.

The United States has condemned the Hong Kong administration’s actions. China and Hong Kong have condemned the immediate release of the arrested journalists.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen said: “It is reprehensible that on December 29, the Hong Kong government raided the Stand News office and arrested seven of its senior staff. This has forced the remaining independent media outlets to cease operations. The press is not treasonous.

We need to stop targeting Hong Kong’s independent media. They are undermining Hong Kong’s credibility by silencing the independent media. A government of trust, not afraid of the truth. It will support a free media, ”he said.
