*Release of a Romanian hostage detained since 2015 in the Sahel: Romania thanks Morocco for “its important support”*
Bucharest, 08/09/2023 (MAP) – Romania thanked, on Wednesday, the Kingdom of Morocco for its “significant support” for the release of the Romanian hostage, Iulian Ghergut, detained in the Sahel since 2015.
In a statement, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the release of this security officer from a manganese mine in northern Burkina Faso, near the borders of Mali and Niger, who had been kidnapped on April 4, 2015 by the Al Mourabitoune group, rallied to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), while thanking Morocco for its “significant support” for his release.
According to the ministry, Iulian Ghergut is currently safe in the territory of Romania where he returned on Wednesday.
For his part, President Klaus Iohannis thanked, via the social network X (ex-Twitter), the “external partners who supported” Romania “in this difficult undertaking”.
