Remains of Missing Colorado Mom Suzanne Morphew Found After 3 Years

The remains of Suzanne Morphew, a missing Colorado mom, have been discovered more than three years after she was last seen. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has positively identified the remains as belonging to Morphew.

Morphew was last seen on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020, which garnered national attention and was featured on the CBS News show “48 Hours.”

Suzanne Morphew left behind her two teenage daughters and husband Barry Morphew, who was not only the prime suspect in her disappearance but was also charged with her murder.

According to the CBI, the remains were found during a search on September 22 in the area of Moffat in Saguache County. The El Paso County Coroner confirmed the identity of the remains as Suzanne Morphew on Wednesday.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze expressed the deep impact of the case on the community and the sheriff’s office. He stated, “We have never stopped our investigation and will continue to follow all leads in pursuit of justice for Suzanne.” No arrests have been made following the discovery of the remains.

The public is urged to continue reporting any information regarding the case by calling (719) 312-7530.

Earlier this year, Barry Morphew filed a lawsuit seeking $15 million, claiming he was wrongfully charged and presumed guilty in his wife’s disappearance. The lawsuit involved Chaffee County, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, and several investigators, including those from the CBI and the FBI.

The details surrounding Suzanne Morphew’s disappearance remain a mystery. She vanished after leaving her home for a bike ride on Mother’s Day 2020, and her bicycle was found in a ravine off Chaffee County Road 225. Investigators stated that the bike did not appear to be involved in a crash, and there was no sign of blood at the scene. Barry Morphew told CBS News Colorado that he believed she was abducted.

During the investigation, friends disclosed that Suzanne and Barry had been arguing about finances and that Suzanne may have had a boyfriend. Documents from Suzanne’s iCloud account were recovered as evidence, including a list she made titled “grievances.” It included references to her missing wedding ring, women on Facebook, and an incident in Mexico where Barry attempted to take her phone.

Barry’s response to Suzanne’s firm text, indicating her desire to end the relationship, involved threats of suicide. Suzanne had exchanged multiple communications with the man presumed to be her boyfriend a day before she went missing.

Barry Morphew was arrested on May 5, 2021, on charges of murder after deliberation, tampering with physical evidence, and attempting to influence a public servant. The case was burdened with complications, including a judge stepping down due to a conflict of interest and the subsequent relocation of the trial from Chaffee County to Fremont County.

In March 2022, Barry’s lawyers requested a dismissal after receiving an internal affairs document concerning the CBI’s Agent In Charge Joe Cahill. The case was marked by multiple hearings and motions regarding admissible evidence and testimonies.

In a surprising turn of events, the case against Barry Morphew was dismissed in April 2022. The dismissal was filed “without prejudice,” indicating the possibility of charges being brought against him in the future.

As the case takes unforeseen twists and turns, the search for answers and justice for Suzanne Morphew continues.
