Berlin – On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Maidan protest in Ukraine, a piano concert took place at the Brandenburg Gate. Ukrainian and German musicians played the so-called Ukrainian piano in the colors of the national flag on Friday in the presence of around 50 spectators, as a dpa reporter reported. The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeyev, gave a speech.

The event was organized on behalf of Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanischyna. The organizers said they wanted to express their “unwavering desire” to “become part of the European family”.

Almost exactly ten years ago, the pro-European protests began on Independence Square (Maidan) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The demonstrations were triggered by a collapsed association agreement with the European Union – Moscow had put pressure on the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. People waited in tents throughout the winter until the violence escalated in February 2014 and snipers shot at demonstrators.
