Worcester Red Sox Mourns the Loss of Tim Wakefield, Champion for Cancer Patients

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Red Sox, along with the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, are mourning the loss of Tim Wakefield, a former Red Sox team president and a dedicated advocate for cancer patients. Wakefield passed away on Sunday at the age of 57 after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Larry Lucchino, principal owner of the Worcester Red Sox and chairman of the Jimmy Fund, expressed his sadness and anger at Wakefield’s untimely death. “My sentiments are of sadness, for this great and good man was taken far too soon,” Lucchino stated. “But they are also of anger, as they are whenever an innocent person is struck by a form of cancer. We have come so very far in the treatment of cancers, and this crushing news brings into stark relief – yet again – that we have miles to go.”

Lucchino also commended Wakefield’s relentless dedication to pediatric and adult cancer patients and their families. Wakefield had been an advocate for cancer research, fundraising, and spreading awareness about the disease. “He was a hero, both on and off the field. The entire Dana-Farber and Jimmy Fund community mourns his loss,” Lucchino added.

Wakefield’s contributions to the Red Sox were also recognized in Lucchino’s statement. He played an integral role in the team’s World Championships of 2004 and 2007, but his impact extended beyond the field. Wakefield was known for his philanthropy and community service, both in New England and his hometown of Melbourne, Florida.

The Worcester Red Sox, in honor of Wakefield’s legacy, announced that their inaugural Brain Cancer Awareness day during the 2023 season would now pay tribute to Wakefield. Lucchino vowed to continue the fight against brain cancer for Wakefield and all others affected by this terrible disease.

Wakefield’s visits to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute left a lasting impact on countless lives, including patients, parents, nurses, physicians, and technicians. “He turned so many daunting days into bright ones with fond memories,” Lucchino recalled.

Heartfelt condolences were extended to Wakefield’s wife, Stacy, and their children, Trevor and Brianna. The community stands united in offering support and love during this difficult time.

The loss of Tim Wakefield serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against cancer. As Lucchino aptly stated, “We have miles to go.” However, Wakefield’s memory and dedication to the cause will continue to inspire and motivate countless individuals to keep fighting against this cruel disease.

Rest in peace, Tim Wakefield. You will be greatly missed, but your legacy will live on in the hearts of all those you touched.
