In the future, digitization in the healthcare sector will bring solutions that can solve the problem of the lack of workforce in the healthcare sector and at the same time solve the problems that represent the biggest challenges in this sector. We talked with the executive director of Siemens Healthineers Slovakia, Vladimír Šolík, about the benefits digitalization of healthcare can bring for both patients and medical staff. He revealed what we can be proud of in Slovakia, but also what processes hinder the development of the Slovak healthcare system.

What can we imagine under the digitization of hospitals?

Digitization is a very broad term, under which several things can be hidden. Healthcare in Slovakia is currently significantly underfunded. The data shows that the investment debt of the Slovak healthcare sector is more than three billion euros, which increases by more than 100 million euros every year compared to the healthcare sector in the Czech Republic. Digitization is a kind of superstructure of healthcare. Of course, digitization can also be used to solve many painful parts of the Slovak healthcare system, such as information sharing, lack of staff, and the like.

How are we compared to the Czech Republic?

Compared to the Czech Republic, we are significantly behind in the field of healthcare, including in the number of introduced innovations. For example, robotic surgery is significantly developed in the Czech Republic. At this moment, the Czechs have more than twelve installations of robotic systems. There are two in Slovakia. If we consider that the Czech population is twice as large as the Slovak one, we should have maybe six such robots in Slovakia compared to the Czech Republic. But we have to be proud of the fact that we have the first Corindus CorPath GRX vascular robot in Slovakia at the University Hospital in Martin, which was developed in cooperation with Siemens Healthineers. Docent Kamil Zeleňák, as one of the pioneers, can use this vascular robot to solve complicated operations on the brain and other vessels.
