Daigo Matsui’s new film tells the reverse story of a love story that, as often, ends badly. But the result remains fairly agreed.

One is a dancer, the other is a taxi driver. In the Japanese capital, they met, loved, torn, separated, rebuilt their lives – or not. Rendez-vous à Tokyo by Daigo Matsui tells them through a device that is a little artificial, but not infertile as to what it produces in the cinema.

Seven sequences unfolding on the same day of July, in reverse, to interest us in this banal and exceptional story as are all love stories, between obligatory dialogues (“no matter how much you change, I will always love you” ) and unexpected pleasures (bar-to-bar Tokyo nightlife, shown with heart-warming fidelity).

The actors are good, polite boredom. The main concern being that we have already seen it in a much more daring and moving film: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Rendez-vous à Tokyo de Daigo Matsui, avec Sosuke Ikematsu, Sairi Ito… 1 h 57.
