Renfe awards Alstom the supply of the ERTMS Baseline 3 system for twenty-eight 253 locomotives

The contract amounts to 11.2 million euros

Renfe Mercancas has selected Alstom for the supply and installation of the ERTMS Baseline 3 system, and fleet parts, in twenty-eight locomotives of the 253 series. The contract amounts to 11.2 million euros and the work must be completed before 31 December 2025.

Renfe Mercancas put this project out to tender in March 2023 (see news) to find a supplier that would provide the technical knowledge and materials necessary for the installation of the ERTMS Baseline 3 system on these S/253 series locomotives. The objective is to facilitate interoperability between different networks and improve traffic safety and the management of merchandise traffic.

Following the announcement of the award, the company will monitor the manufacturing and installation process of the system and the controls that guarantee its correct operation and commissioning on the scheduled dates. According to the established execution plans, the works will have to be completed before December 31, 2025.
