Renfe has announced that it will invest 166.8 million euros this year in comprehensive maintenance, called ‘major repairs’, of its mobile fleet, both passenger and freight trains. These works are carried out periodically to ensure that the moving material is in the best condition to operate safely.

These works are carried out periodically, scheduled and in accordance with a pre-established protocol and consist of subjecting the vehicles to a complete check on all their components and vital parts to guarantee their operation with the safety required for their operation. These large operations are carried out by Renfe Engineering and Maintenance and focus on more complex actions that require the immobilization of the vehicle to carry out a comprehensive intervention.

During this process, all vehicle components are disassembled, repaired and reassembled with special attention to those related to safety and reliability. Likewise, they review, repair or replace those elements of the vehicle that, due to wear and tear, need to be replaced to maintain a high level of comfort for the traveler and those that, due to their special characteristics, are close to the end of their useful life.

This type of special maintenance is carried out in centers specialized in second-level actions, which is what these interventions are called. These centers are the comprehensive maintenance bases of Villaverde (Madrid), Los Prados (Mlaga), Vilanova (Barcelona) and Valladolid for passenger trains and the maintenance bases of Crdoba, Len and Miranda de Ebro for wagons.

After completing these tasks, static and dynamic performance tests are carried out to guarantee the correct functionality of the vehicle. This phase helps detect and solve problems before they occur, which in turn helps maintain the reliability and efficiency of trains.
