Renfe the number of passengers transported in transport services has increased by 35.9% SurroundingsMedium Distance and Avant in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2022, reaching a total of 74.2 million customers in Renfe public services, 19 million more than a year ago.
This growth coincides with the implementation of free passes for frequent travelers in these services, as well as the 50% discount on Avant multi-trip tickets, as reported by the public operator.
in the cores of SurroundingsRenfe has transported 66.8 million customers, with an increase of 29.8%, highlighting the 35.4 million in Madrid and the 17.9 million in Barcelona. In percentage terms, the main increases were registered in Malaga, Santander and Asturias, with 139.8%, 134.1% and 78.5% respectively.
Regarding the services of Media Distancia, increased by 87.3% in these first two months of 2023, which means doubling the number of trips compared to the same period of the previous year. Conventional Media Distancia reached 4.8 million passengers, with an increase of 83%, which means 2.1 million new customers.
For his part, the Avant service reached 1.8 million journeys, with an increase of 92.9%. In these trains, the most demanded lines were Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid, with 379,000 customers and a growth of 77.1%; Madrid-Toledo, with 288,000 customers and 66.5%; and Madrid-Puertollano, with 201,425 trips and 65.1%.
Finally, more than 1 million customers joined the Metric Gauge Cercanías trains, which represents a growth of 68.7% and the incorporation of 450,000 new passengers.
The use of the public service trains of the Spanish company has made it possible to avoid the circulation of more than 50 million private vehicles, the consumption of more than 82 million gasoline and the emission of 250 million kilograms of CO2 and 1.2 million kilograms of Nitrogen Dioxide.
These emissions are equivalent to the CO2 consumption of 3.6 million trees annuallyto a power generation of 791,791,943 kWh, or to the power consumption of nearly 100,000 homes during one day.
