In addition, these funds include actions to improve environmental management and sustainability. This subsidiary, a reference in the provision of comprehensive maintenance and transformation services for vehicles and other industrial activities such as component repair, engineering consulting, facility management and workshop design, has more than 3,000 direct workers and manages purchasing and contracting. in services worth 137 million euros annually. These figures make it an engine for generating employment, both direct and indirect.

The Manufacturing and Maintenance area has joint ventures with the main material manufacturers with a workforce of more than 2,000 workers. These companies, managed jointly, provide the Renfe group with knowledge of different technologies and allow it to stay up to date with the latest technological advances.

Workshop network

Renfe Manufacturing and Maintenance encompasses 98 activity centers distributed throughout the national territory. Regarding their structure, they are divided into first-level workshops, which are those that carry out simpler and faster operations; and second level, where more complex tasks are carried out that require the train to be immobilized. Likewise, it has other types of centers specialized in component repair. In the recent environment of liberalization of passenger transport, these facilities also provide service to new operators such as Iryo and Ouigo.

A thousand trains pass through all these centers annually to carry out maintenance interventions at both levels, both for passenger vehicles and goods motor equipment. In its facilities, work is also carried out to repair components: elements related to air conditioning, gearboxes; mechanical inverters or those concerned with the rolling of passenger trains such as turbo transmissions, valves, brake platforms, etc.

The specialists are in charge of other tasks such as the repair of electric motors, axles, thermal motors, compressors, vacuum pumps, locomotive running boards and other train components. Added to all this are the transformation works that extend the life cycle of the train, through the reconstruction, updating and replacement of the elements of the vehicle systems.

Technology

The annual investment announced by Renfe to promote the industrial part is part of its technological, operational and cultural transformation plans. With this change, an increase in agility and efficiency is sought in all processes to obtain greater value from the data and facilitate the operation of the interventions.

Along these lines, it continues with the implementation of new developments to improve all manufacturing and maintenance processes that guarantee the quality and reliability of its fleet. One of the most recent steps was taken a few months ago with the renewal of asset management, with the new version of the Mximo system. This renovation offers great advantages both from a technological and functional point of view, to ensure complete traceability of all phases of the manufacturing and maintenance process, from the moment engineering designs the plans until they are executed, carrying out exhaustive control that also guarantees safety.

The new version has additional advantages that impact the logistics and supply phase, since they improve the inventory and expiration process of materials, and the monitoring and traceability of assets in warehouses.

Regarding the planned plans, the Manufacturing and Maintenance subsidiary will develop the IMANT+ platform that will transform the main Railway Complexes of Fuencarral and Santa Catalina into Smart Workshops. To do this, cameras and sensors will be installed, which will allow the monitoring and geolocation of vehicles, as well as the use of critical equipment. The amount planned for this project is one million euros.

Sustainability

Finally, in environmental matters, sustainable practices have been implemented in its manufacturing and maintenance process, which have reduced the carbon footprint and promoted greener public transport. Among the main actions, the installation of solar panels in fourteen of its main maintenance bases stands out, which will cover 41 percent of its energy needs.
