Repatriation of Ukrainian orphans blocked, they remain in Italy – Italy-World

A passerby restores the original color of Egonu’s mural vandalized by racists. Meanwhile, street artist Laika launches a poll: “Shall I paint the wall?”. The mural with an anti-racist message, entitled “Italianity”, was created the day after the Olympic gold medal of Italian volleyball players, of which Paola Egonu from Cittadella (Padua) is a leading light.

The artist’s message, in direct polemic with those, like the Lega Nord MEP Vannacci, who claim that Egonu’s physical features are not “Italian”, was welcomed by many with great appreciation and also helped to relaunch the political debate on the need for a new citizenship law, to guarantee the rights of people with immigrant parents, born in Italy or raised here since childhood, who today are forced to wait until they are 18 to obtain official recognition.

Some parties have announced an initiative, including a referendum, for the ius soli and other similar declinations, with the aim of restoring to the children of migrants the rights of their peers: the parties of the center-left are participating, with +Europa in the lead, but positive signals are also coming from Forza Italia. The League and Brothers of Italy are against it.
