Report: Naftali Bennett may prevent the signing of the maritime agreement between Israel and Lebanon

News 12 reported this evening (Monday) that the alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has not yet decided whether to support the agreement being formed between Israel and Lebanon. As I recall, Levant has the right to veto the move, if it reaches the government’s table, but if this agreement is placed on the cabinet’s table, a veto by all the ministers of the right-wing bloc will be needed, in order to prevent the move from being implemented.

According to the report, the former prime minister is studying the details of the agreement, including the changes that have taken place in it since he finished his term. He holds marathon discussions on the subject, at the end of which he is expected to make his final decision.

News 13 also reported on the hesitation of the alternate prime minister, and it was noted that during the last day he expressed reservations about the agreement that was taking shape. Among other things, according to the report, Bennett said that the agreement being formed is different from what he was familiar with, and even asserted that “Lebanon receives the full amount requested”.

As mentioned, in recent days there has been significant progress in the talks between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States, and it seems that the agreement is on its way to being signed. The move was met with sharp criticism from the opposition, and among other things former Prime Minister Netanyahu held a press conference today, in which he accused the government that the agreement does not serve Israel’s interests.

“The time has come to say goodbye. Lapid’s surrender agreement is illegal and will not bind us. For the last ten years of my tenure, I refused to submit to Nasrallah’s dictates. Within three months after one threat from Nasrallah, Lapid surrendered in shame. He gave everything Hezbollah demanded – Hezbollah demanded and Lapid gave,” the opposition chairman noted.

Netanyahu also added on the subject: “Nasrallah receives sovereign territory of the State of Israel, worth billions of dollars. What do you think he will do with them? He will use this money to purchase missiles and rockets that will be aimed at Israel. This is a shameful surrender to terrorism.” He also added: “If Lapid is behaving like this from Haziballah, it is not surprising that he is behaving like this in front of its patron Iran.”

Earlier, Lapid defended the agreement, accusing members of the opposition of “mobilizing for Nasrallah’s propaganda: “I understand the frustration of those who for ten years have not been able to achieve such an agreement, but this is no reason to mobilize for Nasrallah’s and Hezbollah’s propaganda. The Israeli government will continue to work quietly to close the agreement for the benefit of the people of Israel and the State of Israel.”
