For years, the cameras built into Apple laptops and iMacs led a silent life; Innovation takes place elsewhere. Only when the home office and video conferencing became an inevitable trend did the integrated graphics aspect receive more attention in hardware development again. There will be a change of manufacturer next year, if industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed: From 2025, “Sunny Opticals” will be Production equipmentwhich Apple calls the FaceTime camera.

The Chinese manufacturer produces compact camera modules (CCM) and lens systems in Vietnam. This combination is important for the decision, said Kuo – in this way the complexity in Apple’s supply chain is reduced. For current models, LG InnoTek and Sharp provide camera modules for Apple laptops and desktops. In the medium term, this could mean a doubling of sales for Sunny Opticals.

History with a reaction
Sunny Opticals supplied lens elements for iPhones to Apple until 2023, but lost customer confidence after persistent production problems. It is clear that the manufacturer has been able to partially restore this. Apparently Sunny Opticals always improves its manufacturing processes and also maintains communication with Apple. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, it is possible that Sunny will also get a contract for iPhone lens systems in the future.

Part of the case also?
A change in the camera module can also provide additional evidence of the upcoming redesign of the MacBook Pro chassis. According to Bloomberg, Apple is trying to place its laptops in a thin case until the M5 processor is revealed. This is planned for the end of 2025, but no later than the beginning of 2026 – and therefore according to the manufacturer’s transition period. This year, the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air series are expected to switch to the M4 generation of Apple silicon chips. Apple Silicon M4 is currently only used in the iPad Pro models launched in May – the new generation processor will almost certainly find its way into the MacBook Pro and Air this year. However, no significant changes are expected in the packaging of Apple laptops this year.
