The Observatory of Racial Discrimination in Football publishes the tenth edition of a document that examines issues of racism in sport.

According to the Ethnic Difference in Football Report, 136 cases were recorded in Brazil in 2023, an increase of 38.8% compared to the previous period, which had 98 cases reported.

Therefore, the growth trend observed since 2016 is maintained, with the exception of 2020, due to the Covid pandemic and the absence of spectators in stadiums.

“If we have more complaints, it is because Brazilian society is more aware of what racism is and its many forms of expression,” said Marcelo Carvalho, founder and executive director of the Observatory.

The report was presented to the Brazilian Football Council, whose president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, promised to try to find solutions.

“The increase in reported cases reinforces the importance of the problem and its persistent challenges, which require innovative, effective and continued actions to break the silence and historical complicity with racism.”
