Report on Twitter’s fight against misinformation is incomplete, says European Union

by time news

The European Commission considered that Twitter did not provide complete information on how the company has applied policies to combat misinformation on the social network.

In addition to Twitter, several tech companies such as YouTube, Facebook and TikTok also had to file reports on how they implemented the 2022 Disinformation Code of Practice into their policies.

Of the companies asked to submit the report, only Twitter did not release full information about how the company combats misinformation on its platform.

“I am disappointed to see that Twitter’s report lags behind others. I look forward to a more serious commitment to your obligations under the Code.”

The European Union’s Code of Practice on Voluntary Disinformation was first drafted in 2018. With a huge volume of false information following the Covid-19 pandemic, the code was updated in June 2022 with approximately 40 commitments that large technology companies should adopt to fight misinformation on their platforms.

Twitter signed the code before Elon Musk bought the company. The social network agreed to send an update report on its practices to combat misinformation every six months.

“In some areas, Twitter is unable to provide granular data due to resource constraints and data limitations. In other areas, there are issues that are not applicable to the Twitter service.”
