Netanyahu is on his way to Chad: “a historic and important breakthrough”

This will not be the first time that the president of Chad visits Israel. In 2018, then-President Idriss Dabi made a diplomatic visit to the country, which was the first by a Chadian leader since the establishment of the Islamic state. During his visit, he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as with then-President Reuven Rivlin, when he told them that “this visit will make it possible to open a new page in our relations.”

In January 2019, Netanyahu went on his first visit to Chad, where he and Dabi announced the renewal of diplomatic relations between the countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimated that the renewal of relations with Chad helped promote the normalization with Sudan and Morocco, which took place in the following years.

Chad is located in central Africa, bordering Libya, Sudan, Cameroon and Nigeria. It is the fifth largest country in Africa, and a total of 15.8 million inhabitants live there, of which one and a half million live in the capital city of N’Djamena. The country was established in 1960 after gaining independence from France, and to this day French is still considered an official language alongside the Arabic language.
