“The purpose is not to report the coins you own”
The prosecution requested six months in prison for former Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Nam-guk, who was sent to trial on charges of falsely reporting assets to the National Assembly to hide the fact that he owned a large amount of cryptocurrency (coin).
The prosecution requested that former lawmaker Kim be sentenced to six months in prison at a trial held on the morning of the 18th by Judge Jeong Woo-yong, Criminal Division 9 of the Seoul Southern District Court, on charges of hierarchical obstruction of official duties.
The prosecution stated the reason, saying, “The defendant’s purpose was not to report the coins he owned,” and “he interfered with the National Assembly Public Service Ethics Committee’s review of the assets of National Assembly members through hierarchical methods.”
In order to hide the fact that he had earned a large amount of profit by investing in coins when reporting his assets to the National Assembly twice in 2021 and 2022, former lawmaker Kim transferred some of the coin deposits to a bank deposit account to match the total assets and converted the remaining deposits into coins to be used by National Assembly officials. He is accused of interfering with the Ethics Committee’s review of the statement of changes in assets.
The prosecution believes that former lawmaker Kim hid the fact that he had coin deposits of about 9.9 billion won during the asset reporting process in 2021 and reported his total assets as about 1.2 billion won, and hid about 990 million won in the same way in 2022.
