/ Amid allegations of the deployment of American nuclear weapons in Britain, reported by a British newspaper, an official at the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) refused, on Saturday, to confirm or deny these reports, citing this as part of America’s policy not to confirm or deny the locations of its nuclear weapons.

The British newspaper “The Telegraph” had previously revealed that the United States was planning to deploy nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom for the first time in 15 years.

According to the newspaper, contracts for a new facility at the British Royal Air Force base in Lakenheath confirm that Washington intends to place nuclear warheads three times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.

Commenting on the report, a Pentagon official refused to confirm or deny it, telling the Telegraph: “The United States routinely modernizes its military facilities in allied countries.”

He added: “Such activities are often accompanied by unclassified administrative budget documents. These documents do not predict, nor are they intended to reveal, any specific position or details of the rules.”

He continued: “It is the policy of the United States not to confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons in any public or specific place.”

The United States removed its own nuclear missiles from the United Kingdom in 2008, believing that the Cold War threat from Russia had diminished.
