French authorities have brought preliminary charges against communication websites Telegram creator and CEO Pavel Durov for allowing alleged illegal activities on his communication site, including drug trafficking and distribution of child pornography, and avoiding disclosure of information and documents to investigators as required by law. P. Durov has been released from custody on bail, but is prohibited from leaving France while the investigation is ongoing, reports France24. com.

P. Durov is a citizen of France, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the Caribbean island country of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Do not keep in custody

Asspciated Press reports that P. Durov was detained on Saturday at the Lebourgeois airport near Paris, where he flew in from Azerbaijan. On Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced that a formal investigation had been launched against 39-year-old P. Durov. He was not remanded in custody but was released on bail of five million euros on the condition that he not leave France and must report to the police station twice a week.

The BBC reports that the preliminary charges brought against P. Durov are said to be investigating his possible involvement in an online platform that allows organized criminal groups to carry out illegal activities. French law carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros. His possible refusal to cooperate with the authorities, as well as his possible participation in the illegal distribution of sexual images of children, are also being investigated.
