Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have expressed concern over Donald Trump’s decision to name Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate, a choice they say is inappropriate and potentially damaging to his chances of winning the November election, The Hill reported.
One of the main reasons for the criticism is Vance’s foreign policy stance, his lack of experience and his inability to attract new voters to the Republican coalition outside Trump’s base.
“He was the worst choice of all. It’s so bad I didn’t even think it was possible. Anti-Ukrainian, mostly populist. He adds nothing to Trump’s victory. He energizes the same people who love Trump,” said one Republican.
While Vance’s supporters include hard-line conservatives who embrace populist “America first” policies, many veterans and moderate Republicans who embrace a traditional, Reagan-style conservative foreign policy are openly skeptical of the choice.
“If you asked many people in this building, 9 out of 10 would say this is the wrong choice, he is the only person who can do serious harm,” added another Republican.
Some Republicans are warning that if Trump fails to defeat Democrat Kamala Harris in November, it will be tied to his choice of vice presidential candidate. The divisions over Vance continue to deepen within the party, which could affect the election results.
