Over the last few years, it has been denounced that our country suffers from a deficit of health professionals. For this reason, different actions have been undertaken to increase the number of elements. Now a new strategy consists of the Recruitment of retired doctors to join the IMSS Bienestar. In this way, it seeks to have as many workers as possible to care for patients.
Do retired doctors want to return to work?
All part of a statement by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He indicated that there are around 10,000 retired medical specialists between the ages of 55 and 65. He assured that at that age they still have a lot to give and that is why he invited them to return to work.
In this case, the strategy presented consists of a contract to start working immediately. It lasts for five years and during that period they will be paid a “fair wage” in addition to their monthly pension.
For their part, the authorities indicated that there are currently spaces available in 43 specialties and subspecialties.
Requirements for retired doctors who want to enter the IMSS Bienestar
- Valid passport.
- Title and Professional Certificate (or equivalent) of the Specialty.
- Curriculum Vitae updated and signed.
- Spanish language proficiency.
- Being a specialist doctor (in the selection process, the revalidation of their studies will be managed before the Mexican educational authorities, in the appropriate cases).
- Letter from the last employer.

- Bonus of up to 30% for working in rural areas.
- Payment of 45 days of salary in the second half of July of each year.
- Payment of 40 days of Christmas bonus, in the first fortnight of December of each year.
- Social Security in Mexico for the Family nucleus (Wife or Spouse, Parents and Children).
- Payment of High Cost of Living and/or Isolated Area in various locations of the Federative Entities.
- Continuous training.
All retired doctors interested in joining IMSS Bienestar must register at this link. One of the objectives is to guarantee the medical attention service to the inhabitants of the most remote areas of the country.
Other strategies to end the deficit of health workers
The initiative joins others that have been implemented recently. Among the main ones is the creation of the University of Health in Mexico City. Its goal is to train doctors and nurses to provide support in rural communities.
Similarly, since 2020 the spaces available in the National Examination for Applicants for Medical Residency (ENARM) have doubled. In this way, it seeks to end the deficit of specialists that prevails in the country.
In addition, a scholarship was also opened to study the specialty abroad. Although one of the biggest complaints is that the only country available is Cuba. In fact, many of the young people who have obtained this benefit reject it.
