Research looks at the quest for absolute black

NARRATIVE-From prehistoric paintings to the paintings of Pierre Soulages, obtaining the darkest pigments possible has never been an easy task.

Black is a color like any other. A statement far from obvious, as the black contrasts and is so difficult to grasp. Isaac Newton had also excluded it from the chromatic spectrum! However, darkness has accompanied humanity in the history of its representations since very ancient times.

On the walls of the Chauvet cave in Ardèche, 35,000 years ago, artists immortalized their world using charcoal. From these prehistoric paintings, to the paintings of Pierre Soulages, artists have never stopped exploring the particularities of this color which, like no other, has the art of taming light.
