Title: Papaya Leaves Found to Increase Platelet Count and Aid in Dengue Fever Recovery

Date: August 10, 2023

In the midst of a significant rise in dengue fever cases this year, research findings have revealed that papaya leaves, an herb known for its medicinal properties, can effectively increase platelet count and aid in a quicker recovery.

According to Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, the number of dengue patients has increased threefold compared to the same period last year. The Department of Disease Control has reported a weekly increase of over 5,000 dengue cases nationwide, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus with its four strains, can result in mild to severe symptoms, with some patients requiring hospitalization.

One of the main issues faced by dengue patients is a low platelet count, as the virus affects the body’s ability to produce enough platelets. While there is currently no specific treatment for dengue fever, symptomatic treatments such as the use of antipyretic drugs and maintaining hydration are recommended to manage the symptoms.

However, recent research has shown promising results regarding the use of herbal remedies. Andrographis paniculata, also known as “thunder,” has been found to be effective against the second strain of dengue virus, aiding in managing early-stage dengue fever.

Furthermore, studies conducted at Phen Hospital in Udon Thani Province have highlighted the potential of papaya leaf juice as an adjunct treatment for dengue fever. The study involved 78 patients who were given a dose of 30cc of papaya leaf juice three times a day. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a shorter hospital stay, with platelet counts returning to normal by day 5 compared to the control group.

Dr. Pakakrong, a researcher at Phen Hospital, explained that papaya leaves have properties that improve platelet count, reduce body temperature, and enhance overall patient comfort. The recommended dosage is 1-3 papaya leaves (not too young or too old), weighing a total of 20 grams, crushed and filtered to extract approximately 20ml of juice. The juice is then mixed with 2 teaspoons of coconut sugar and consumed before meals, three times a day for 5-7 consecutive days.

While further research is still needed, the potential benefits of papaya leaves in dengue fever treatment offer hope for patients and healthcare professionals alike. As dengue outbreaks continue to pose a major health concern, the use of natural remedies like papaya leaves could potentially provide relief and aid in a faster recovery process.]
