In Belgium it is already possible to use bacteriophages, the viruses of bacteria, to fight diseases in human beings, but this technique is not recognized in the European Union, putting aside an option that, unlike antibiotics, does not create resistance and directly targets the cause of many infectious diseases. Joana Azeredo, university professor and researcher, is trying to make this therapy also recognized in Portugal.
