Residents of several cities in the Northeast reported fright and surprise at what they saw on Friday night (22): a large ball of fire crossing the sky at a fast pace. Videos with images of the object were posted on social media and sparked curiosity.

According to a preliminary analysis by Bramon (Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network), the fireball is a re-entry into the atmosphere of space debris from a Chinese rocket launched in 2018 at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, in Sichuan province.

For Astronomiaum, an astronomy page on X (formerly Twitter), the fireball could be space debris from SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, which failed before reaching Earth’s orbit.

A resident of Serrinha, in Rio Grande do Norte, described the phenomenon as a fragmented trail of light. In Amargosa, Bahia, another resident described the sight as beautiful but frightening.

The fireball was also seen in Jati (CE), Guanambi (BA), Floresta (PE), Vitória da Conquista (BA), Angicos (RN), Senador Rui Palmeira (AL), Barra de Santa Rosa (PB), Curimataú (PB), Juazeiro (BA), Petrolina (PE), São Bento (PB), Cícero Dantas (BA) and Taperoá (BA).

In June, residents of several cities in the interior of São Paulo, Paraná, Minas Gerais and Goiás saw bright, colorful lights in the shape of balls in the sky.

Experts stated that the lights could come from space debris or bolides, which are bright meteors.
