Mahinda Deshapriya, the former chairman of the Election Commission, has said that the resignation of a member of the Election Commission will not be a hindrance to the activities of the Commission.
“Three members are sufficient for the functioning of the commission and the resignation of one will not affect the functioning of the commission,” he said in his home page entry. He mentioned this by citing the Articles of the Constitution.
A member of the commission, PSM Charles, was said to have resigned from his duties yesterday.
The Office of the President has informed that the said letter of resignation has been received by the President of Sri Lanka.
“In the absence of the chairman, one of the members elected by the members present can preside over the meeting. The resolution of their majority vote will be passed,” said Mahinda Deshapriya.
Also, he pointed out by quoting the clause of the constitution that the commission was empowered to act even though the membership of the commission was vacant.
