The Socialist Party calls for a symbolic march on May 24 in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique) in support of the resigning mayor Yannick Morez (DVD), the party’s first deputy secretary, Johanna Rolland, announced on Thursday. BFM TV. The latter left his post after threats linked to a project to transfer a reception center for asylum seekers.

“When what happened in Saint-Brévin, the whole Republic backs down,” said the mayor of Nantes. “Never should a mayor find himself in a position to choose between the exercise of his mandate and the protection of his loved ones,” she added. She invites “all elected officials attached to the values of the Republic, activists, sympathizers, all humanists who refuse to give in to the intimidation of the National Rally”, to be “many” that day.

A call launched jointly with the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure and the first deputy vice-president of the Association of mayors of France André Laignel, she indicated.

In a press release, all three stress that the resignation of the mayor “is an alarm for all Republicans”. “No one should accept that a mayor who fulfills his duty of fraternity by hosting a place of accommodation for asylum seekers, can be intimidated and suffer the burning of his own house”, they affirm, regretting that the State, “after being alerted, did not react, leaving this elected official alone in the face of the threat from the far right”.

“We won’t let it go”

Deploring that “the trivialization of the parliamentary extreme right has liberated throughout the territory, the speech and now the action of individuals or groups who feel legitimate to spread the venom of racism”, they affirm: “We will not let not pass”.

Since the resignation of Yannick Morez, the political class has been revolted by the situation, in particular Élisabeth Borne, who is worried about the “rise of extremism in our country”. Her entourage clarified that she would offer to receive the resigning elected representative at Matignon “next week”. The inhabitants of this commune of Loire-Atlantique were also widely indignant following this resignation, including the people who oppose this project to move the reception center for asylum seekers.
