Resigned, Gabriel Attal will remain prime minister “to ensure the stability of the country” (Elysée)

Paris – French President Emmanuel Macron received, early Monday afternoon, Gabriel Attal who came to present the resignation of his government the day after the second round of the legislative elections which did not result in an absolute majority in the National Assembly .

Faced with this unprecedented political situation in France, President Macron asked his Prime Minister to remain in charge “for the moment in order to ensure the stability of the country”, announced the Elysée Palace in a press release.

According to the final results of the second round of the legislative elections published by the French Ministry of the Interior, the left alliance, brought together under the banner of the New Popular Front, came first, with 182 seats, followed by the presidential camp, under the banner of Ensemble which won 168 seats, and the National Rally (far right) and its allies (143 seats).

Thus, all political parties cannot reach, on their own, the 289 deputies necessary for an absolute majority.

However, parliamentary life will resume in the National Assembly on July 18, notably with the election of its new president. The distribution of positions between the different groups represented will also be carried out and finally the development of the parliamentary calendar, including the much-anticipated discussion of the next budget.
