Respiratory complaints in pigs higher in the winter months

by time news

Compared to the summer period, the number of reported respiratory complaints in pig farming in the Royal GD Online Monitor is higher in the winter period. In recent years it appeared that from November to March the number of reports of respiratory complaints is approximately 10% higher than in the summer period. On average, one third of the total number of reported complaints is attributed to respiratory problems.

Veterinarians cite Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App), influenza and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae as the most likely cause of the complaints on pig farms. Secondary and often opportunistic pathogens are also often reported as a cause of respiratory complaints, namely Bordetella bronchiseptica, Glaesserella parasuis, Pasteurella multocida, and streptococci.

There is a seasonal influence in infections with PRRS. The number of infections is highest in the winter months. This is less clear with influenza infections. The data from the Online Monitor shows that in the winter months, veterinarians more often think of APP or influenza when dealing with respiratory complaints. Furthermore, it appears that veterinarians assess the role of Mycoplasma equally throughout the year, while pathological research in the years 2019-2022 shows that the percentage of sections where Mycoplasma is detected is lower in the winter months.

In the pigs submitted for pathological research at GD, 19% of the pigs with respiratory complaints had App present in the first half of 2022, Mycoplasma in 13% and influenza in more than 9%. In the Online Monitor, 27% of respiratory complaints were attributed to App, 6% to Mycoplasma and 20% to influenza. This discrepancy can also be seen in previous years.

The other part in pathological examination consists of pneumonia without a proven pathogen, pneumonia due to Streptococcus suis, and pneumonia due to Pasteurella multocida. In the Online Monitor, the probability of diagnosis of PRRS, streptococci and climate are also included.
