Title: Corrections Department Responds to Allegations of Neglect and Influenza Outbreak in Prison

Date: Friday, October 20, 2023

The Department of Corrections has issued a response to recent social media claims regarding the well-being of prisoner Mr. Sophon Surarittamrong, also known as Get, who is currently detained under Section 112. Allegations were made that he was sick and not receiving medical care, and that an influenza outbreak had occurred within the prison. The department has confirmed that there is no outbreak of influenza and that appropriate medical care is being provided.

The Department of Corrections conducted an investigation into the matter at Bangkok Remand Prison. It was discovered that on October 16, 2023, the prison infirmary was alerted by the Region 4 Control Department about Mr. Sophon’s illness, characterized by symptoms such as fever, cough, phlegm, and mucus. A nurse was immediately dispatched to assess his condition. In fact, the prison has nurses conducting regular check-ups on sick inmates across different control departments, ensuring that their symptoms are adequately monitored. Presently, Mr. Sophon is living a normal life within the prison after receiving treatment, and he no longer shows any symptoms of illness. Furthermore, the Bangkok Special Prison, where he is housed, has not reported any influenza outbreak.

Regarding the availability of influenza vaccines, the Department of Disease Control has allocated them to the Department of Corrections based on the Corrections Sharing Suk Project plan. This year, a total of 43,000 doses were allocated, with 5,250 doses specifically for prisons and correctional facilities in Bangkok. These vaccines are being administered to target groups in line with the Ministry of Public Health’s policies. Additionally, inmates who are considered vulnerable, such as those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions, are prioritized to receive the vaccine, ensuring their health conditions are safeguarded similarly to those outside the prison.

For general prisoners who wish to receive the influenza vaccine, the Department of Corrections is currently in the process of requesting vaccine support from the Department of Disease Control. It has been observed that some inmates are experiencing flu-like symptoms due to climate changes, prompting the establishment of a dedicated area to isolate and treat those who are sick. Moreover, specialized doctors from the host hospital routinely visit and inspect the prison, ensuring the provision of adequate medical care. The prison receives sufficient medicine and medical supplies, as supported by the host hospital. The Department of Corrections strives to provide healthcare to all inmates, in adherence to human rights principles, academic standards, and professional ethics, without any form of discrimination.

The Department of Corrections seeks to assure the public that Mr. Sophon’s condition is being adequately monitored and treated, and that there are no ongoing influenza outbreaks within the prison. It remains committed to upholding the health and well-being of all inmates by providing appropriate medical care and adhering to established standards.]
