Response to new EU sanctions: Iran imposes counter-sanctions

by time news

After new EU sanctions against Iran, Tehran has imposed counter-sanctions. 34 people and organizations were put on a sanctions list – EU mandater Lukas Mandl from the ÖVP is also affected.

After new EU sanctions, Iran has imposed counter-sanctions, for example against the ÖVP-EU MP Lukas Mandl. As the Foreign Ministry in Tehran announced on Wednesday, a total of 34 people and organizations were put on a sanctions list, including other members of the European Parliament, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and two German officers. Iran accuses them of “supporting terrorism” and “interfering in internal affairs.”

The punitive measures include entry bans and the freezing of possible assets in Iran. The EU foreign ministers decided on new punitive measures in Brussels on Monday because of the serious human rights violations surrounding the recent wave of protests in Iran. These met 37 people and organizations – including the sports and youth minister Hamid Sajjadi, parliamentarians, members of the military and the umbrella organization of moral guardians.

The trigger for the nationwide protests in Iran was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested by the Morality Police for breaking the Islamic dress code. The protests against the repressive government and the Islamic system of rule have plunged the political leadership into one of the most serious crises in decades.
